Retirement has undergone a significant transformation from its origins in the 1880s when Otto von Bismarck introduced the first modern pension system. Back then, retirement age was set at 70, while life expectancy was much lower. Today, many retirees can expect to live 30 or more years in relatively good health, yet society often continues to view retirement as the final chapter of life rather than an opportunity for reinvention.

Actress and activist Jane Fonda, in her 2011 TED Talk "Life’s Third Act," challenges this outdated perspective. She describes the later years of life as a time for growth, purpose, and fulfilment rather than decline. Instead of retirement being an endpoint, it can be a time of personal evolution—an opportunity to redefine oneself and pursue passions that may have been set aside during career-focused years.

A fulfilling retirement is supported by four key pillars:

  1. Financial Wellness – Having the resources to sustain your desired lifestyle.

  2. Physical Vitality – Maintaining health and energy through good habits.

  3. Mental Engagement – Staying intellectually active through learning and new challenges.

  4. Social Connection – Building meaningful relationships and staying engaged with the community.

To navigate this transition successfully, retirees should focus on three essential elements:

  • Plan – A flexible strategy for how to spend time and resources.

  • Purpose – Engaging in meaningful activities that provide direction.

  • People – Cultivating relationships that offer connection and joy.

Instead of simply asking, "Do I have enough to retire?" this perspective encourages individuals to reflect on a deeper question: "What story do I want my Third Act to tell?" Retirement can be a period of rich experiences and continued growth, rather than just an endless weekend.
